Question 3: What have you learned from your audience feedback?

For my overall feedback of all products, I created a survey monkey, as shown in the images below. From this feedback I got my target audience to tell me what they think.

Here is the feedback I receive

Question 3 by Kiran on Scribd

All products Audience feedback Video:

What would I change if I was to of the project again?
Overall, I dont think I would change much, because I made all of the changes whilst working on the project as I gained an heavy amount of feedback whilst creating the print products and trailer. However, If I was to do the project again I would change the way the on the print products, there is only the main characters. Next Time I would maybe add the other characters onto the pint products too, just so that they look more exciting and the narrative looks like its got more to it.
When gaining feedback, if I was to do the project again, would deliberately ask my target I would deliberately ask the audience for negative feedback, which would give me more improvements to work on, resulting in best possible products.
I asked my team-mate what I would do as a final action if I was to do the project again and she said to use different types of lighting in the trailer to fit in with the psychological thriller. I agree wit this feedback, after watching my trailer over several times, I realised most of the scene use similar lighting, so this could be an area to improve on.

My explanation of linking products:
Throughout all of my products, I have linked them all to follow the conventions of the psycholigcal thriller genre. In the trailer, the voiceover is used to help portray the narrative tot eh audience, which is a typically conventions throughout and near the start of the trailer to help set the narrative. Following conventions linked to the narrative film links to Rick Altman's theory if semantic and syntactic elements. I used various different shot types throughout the trailer , to set the narrative up and keep a consistent flow flow to the trailer.
I have linked the magazine cover and movie poster by making both images look dull and dark, so the theme of portrayed.
Another feature that I Kept consistent was the title 'Think Twice' so it would be recognisable to the target audience. I also used interfiles of just names in the trailers dot the font is the same as the the one that is on the movie poster, again, so that it would be easily noticed by the target audience and because it is a clear and easy to read font.
I have included my production details and social media references in the trailer to make it more realistic. Using social media links my products as it makes the whole productional campaign more accessible and it suits my target audience. Due to my movie being aimed teenagers and adults, social media is a popular and powerful promotional tool, resulting in the audience being more in touch with technology and social media.

Trailer Feedback

For my trailer feedback, I received thourough comments and improvements from my teacher. He said that I have used a range of scenes and shots and composition. An improvement suggested was to level out the audio recording volume, so it was balanced. Another improvement to make was to change the release date and and not to make it look so cheesy, and get rid of the thunder clap sound effect near the end of the trailer because it did not fit in, and was not very professional. I also came to a conclusion that the shots near the end of the trailer were out of balance compared to the music, so to improve this I will change the scenes around and extend the music so it flows.

Trailer- Draft 1

This my first draft trailer, which I have created using IMovie. Now that all of my scenes are in place, I am able to make minor improvements, and detail improvement to my work, making it look more professional. After receiving feedback from my target audience, I realised that the end credits and text does not flow very well, and that the music towards the end drags a little.
In order to improve this I am going to:
  • Change the pace of music
  • edits scenes and shorten the trailer so that the music fits in well
  • Add a 'coming...' scene, with promotional features/ advertisement of the production
The audience feedback is in the comments of this blog post below.

Title and Release Date

When creating the scene for the title of "think twice", and release date, I struggled in finding the best way to present the text. At first I used a scene from my footage filming, and cropped out the scenery to make it look mysterious: Shown in the following image.
However, I change my mind about this title and background because it did not look very professional and I noticed that the quality of the text was not very good.
I then experience with other types of backgrounds, such as plain black, as seen in the image below.
I also experimented with using one of the images I had taken for my print products, and decided to crop out the background, for the title scenes. This is the photo which I cropped the background from. I did this so that I could have a unique but intense background, which also flows well in the trailer.

My Final Title Shot:

Inspiration for release date scene:
I did research into the release dates, and how they are presented in the trailer. I found that most trailers have the release date on a different shot, usually centred on the page, and in big letters.
The following trailer's that I looked do not have a specific date on which the film is to be released, however, I noticed advertisement purposed such as links to social media, by using the trending features such as hash-tags, and the website is also placed on most of the shots with the release date on.
I learnt from this research but altered my final making of the release date scene. Instead of having 'Coming soon', I decided to add a official release date to make the trailer seem more realistic and accurate. I also added icons of popular of social media, in which the audience could then follow to find more about the movie.
I used Sketch to create my release date scene, as shown in the screenshot below.

Credits

Research on Credits:
The credits in a trailer is important for the audience to be aware of the main people who were involved in producing the movie trailer in any way. The layout for most film credits are at the end of a trailer are similar, and the titles of the job is written in smaller size text, and the names have a bigger size font to stand out.
The distribution company names and exhibition company are also included in the credits, in some ways to promote the company too.
The screenshots above are from horror movies, such as, Eden lake and House of willow. I choose to look at trailer with the same theme as my trailer to get ideas on how to present my credits. I particularly picked out these credits because I liked the way the text was spread in the centre on the page, rather then looking like a list. Another common convention of the credits is that the text if placed onto a black background, with the text being a lighter colour, usually white, in order for the text to stand out to the viewers.

Underneath the text, there are several promotional logo's of the companies who have worked with the film producers, and these logo's are placed to make the logo of the company become more recognisable to the audience. It also makes the movie trailer look more professional. After looking into these common conventions I created my own credits using Sketch. I downloaded a legal font from 'Dafont' website called steel fish as it fitted in perfectly with the type of common font used for credits.

Music and Sound effects

For my trailer, when finding music , I used certain effects from iMovie, and builded upon these sound effects to create more of a suspenseful sound. At first I choose one sound track to use for the first part of the trailer, however I then added other more dramatic effects, at the parts in the trailer, as seen in the screenshot

After the introduction of the trailer, I used a 'thunder clap' sound effect, to set a dark atmosphere. by adding a black screen background at this point also shows the audience that something else is about to happen, making them feel like they she continue watching, as they would be drawn in by the first few shots of Spencer.

Throughout my whole trailer, I decided to add one piece of music, which I found from a channel on YouTube. I picked this music because it fitted in perfectly with my trailer, as they music started of soft and calm, and the atmosphere built up gradually, the same way the excitement in the trailer grows. I added a second piece of music, but cropped it down, to use only where I wanted extra suspense and tension to be created.
For my voiceovers, I used a professional microphone to record the voiceovers to add in certain parts of the trailer. When I planned the voiceover, I wanted them to be very confusing but to add tension too, which is seen in the trailer.
When adding the voiceovers to my trailer, I lowered the music in the background, so that the voice is heard clearly. I left the music running in the background as a settling effect.

Trailer: Editing

When editing my movie trailer, I realised that some of many shots I have planned are flash backs, and in order for the audience to understand, which scene is  flashback scene, I decided to use features of an recording camera settings, to make the shot look like it is footage of the past. The purpose of this is to make the audience be more aware of the narrative.
The Green Screen:
Created using Sketch, adding a green background, and then adding in other features of a recording camera picture, such as Recording feature, date, time and battery level.
Editing the shots:
When editing the shots, I used the crop tool to crop any unnecessary filming, making each shot fit into the trailer nicely. I used the colour effects tool, which allowed me to change the contrast, brightness, saturations and hue. Due to this tool I managed to make the different shots look in a different way, for example, the flashbacks scenes, look like they are old because of the effects used in them, as seen in the screenshots below.
I also adjusted the clips by stabilising the shaky videos, making the filming look more professional. I cropped the clips, to fit the screen, focusing the centre of the clip where I believed was most appropriate, achieving the type of shot I was looking for.

Intertitles

Inter titles Research :
For my inter-titles research I viewed other existing movie trailers, with a similar theme to my movie trailer. I looked into movies trailers such as, Gone Girl, The Black Swan, Prisoners, and Shutter Island. In the Gone Girl, I particularly picked out the way the inter-title was placed in the same shot with the actor/actress, showing clearly the name of which actor is starring in the movie. In Shutter Island trailer I like the way the titles were bold and easy to read, making them stand out. In The Black Swan trailer, I picked out the different effects used at the bottom of each inter-title, which linked in to the theme of black swan, as features were shown. For the Split trailer the inter-title were placed in the middle of the page, centralised to emphasis the attention, and the text was also very large, and bold. These inter-titles were also placed on black background, and with the writing being white, it was easy to read.
Common Features of Inter-title:
  • Bold and simple text/ stands out
  • Easy to read
  • Placed in a certain position continuously in each shot
  • Linked to them/ font style

Trailer inspiration

For my movie trailer, I did some research into existing movie trailer, such as Gone Girl, The Black Swan and Split. I particularly liked the way that the trailers structure was very straight forward but did not give away too much information about the narrative at the same time.
I also looked into the film trailer of The Black Swan, and liked this one as it gave me inspiration for my trailer and how to structure the different shots. The mise en scene is shown to be revealing but not very clearly, indicating the excitements and thrill of watching the whole movie. I also liked the way the music and diegetic sound was presented as it was a fair balance of both.
In the Split trailer, I was inspired by the lack of knowledge shown to the audience about each character, as the main character has a deeper focus and I plan to use this technique in my trailer, as the character of Spencer Hastings is going to be the main character who is talked about throughout most of the trailer. I was also inspired by the voiceover of different characters, showing an insight into each characters mind, which also builds up on informing the audience about the narrative of the movie.

Magazine Feedback

For my magazine feedback I used voice recorder to record what the audience thinks about my mock ups.I have posted the audio recording through 'Soundcloud'.
The feedback I received from my target audience was mostly positive, as this is my final magazine and I have previously made many improvements such as change of fonts and image editing.
Feedback Results:
  • Great use of colours: unisex colours (blue, red and white) makes the magazine stand out
  • Colours:Blue helps with the background image stand out, as it links to the theme of mystery
  • Image- character looking straight on at the camera- builds emphasis on theme
  • Image draws in attention and layout is well presented
  • Coverlines are creative

Creating Final Magazine Cover

Making my magazine poster
For creating my final magazine, I used Photoshop to edit my final image. I edited my final image by adding more colour to the eyes, making them send out, as seen in the screenshot below.
I also adjusted the contrast and brightness, and went through each section of the image, to clear up any blemishes, making the image become visibly more attractive
I used the magic wand to remove the background, and replaced the background with a cropped image of dark clouds, which builds the emphasis on the mood the cover is trying to set.
I then placed my Masthead underneath the image, as typical this is a common convention of magazine covers.

Next I added my text into the cover, and used a variety of similar fonts such as

I decided to go for the house styles of orange, blue and white, as they are unisex colours, and stand out on the background. I changed the font sizes so that the most important words which would be able to grab the readers attention were in a larger size, and the smaller text, giving a small insight into what is provided in the magazine.
After adding the title, "THINK TWICE", I went through all text and added drop shadow where it was needed, in order to make the text stand out more. Then after adding my banner and small essentials such as bar code, date and issue number and price, I created my pug.
When creating the pug, I used the shape tool and added layers of circles to create a pattern for effects.

Make-up For Trailer

Whilst planning the filming for my film trailer, the makeup used on the characters is very Important as it represents the characters in a certain way.
The main character which make up was essential to apply to, was the character of Spencer, who get beaten up and tortured in the attic.

I decided to use dark colours on the eyes to make Spencer eye look swollen and bruised. In order to get this kind of effect I used the colours, black and brown from the palettes shown below. Closer to the eye I used black to make the bruise look realistic, and then around the around, I faded the colours, to purples and browns, as seen in the screenshot below.

To create the effects on a bloody mouth, I used a bright red lipstick, and petroleum jelly to get a moist texture, make the the makeup look like real blood. This was a advantage, because the audience will become aware that Spencer is hurt, and the proof of the will be presented through the bruises and bloody mouth.
In order to mix the jelly and lipstick , I placed the lipstick onto the outside of my hand and then mixed the petroleum jelly on top, creating a textured paint type effect.
